Owning and carrying a gun is not necessarily a crime in the U.S. The right to own and carry firearms is spelled out in the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State,
the right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed.

However, there are circumstances in which carrying a gun might be considered a crime and in some cases a felony. For example, carrying a firearm in a commercial airliner or carrying a stolen weapon, possessing a firearm while possessing a controlled substance, etc.
